Prof. Yener Ünver graduated from the Faculty of Law at Istanbul University in 1986. After completing his legal internship, he became a research assistant in the Department of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law at Istanbul University in 1987. He completed his master's thesis in 1990. After defending his PhD dissertation in 1996, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law. On May 15, 2002, he became an Associate Professor of law. He became a professor in February 2008. In addition to his academic duties in the Faculty of Law at Istanbul University, Prof. Ünver also had administrative roles carrying out organizational tasks, such as membership in various committees and boards, including the Ethics Committee and Discipline Committee, Erasmus Coordinator, etc. In September 2007, he resigned from the Faculty of Law at Istanbul University and joined the Faculty of Law at Yeditepe University. He served in the Turkish Football Federation's Discipline Committee from 2006 to 2007 and the Legal Committee of the Turkish Basketball Federation from 2005 to 2007. He was a founding member of the Arbitration Board of the Turkish Football Federation from 2008 to 2011. Currently, he is a member of various organizations, including the World Association for Medical LAW (the U.S.A), the Turkish Criminal Law Association, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (Salzburg), the International Comparative Law Association (Paris), and the Istanbul Bar Association. On September 21, 2011, he was awarded an honorary doctorate (honoris causa) in law by Grigol Robakidze University Alma Mater in Tbilisi, Georgia. On October 27, 2014, by a joint decision of the University of National and World Economy in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the Centre for Roman Law Teaching and Romanistic Education of this University, he was awarded the Commemorative medal “Professor Stefan Bobchev” and the diploma. Additionally, Prof. Ünver was awarded the “Patient Rights Service Plaque Award” at a ceremony held at the Istanbul Chamber of Physicians on October 22, 2011, within the scope of the activities of Patient Rights Day 2011, organized under the leadership of HAYAD (Patient Rights Association) in the category of “Legal Professional or Institution”. As of March 2011, he has served as the founding dean of the Faculty of Law at Özyeğin University for 10 years and had various administrative roles at the same university, including Directorship of the Research Center for German Law, which was established by the same university, for 12 years. Prof. Dr. Dr.h.c. Yener Ünver has been serving as an observer for the trial of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) (related to numerous crimes, including Neo-nazi Murders against Turkish businessmen) on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey in Munich, Germany since 2014. He was appointed as a member of the Scientific Board of the Turkish Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (TUBİM) by the General Directorate of Security of the Ministry of Interior Affairs of the Republic of Turkey on 19/11/2015. Serving as a member on the editorial boards of scientific journals published in many countries, Prof. Ünver was elected as the Deputy Chairman of the Doctoral Council of the National Aviation Academy High Certificate Commission under the Presidency of the Republic of Azerbaijan as of September 24, 2021, via protocol Decision 09-R, which is still in force.
Prof. Ünver, who published the journal Hukuk Köprüsü/Rechtsbrücke, for which he was a writer and editor of 25 issues for 12 years, started publishing Der Rechtsstaat / Hukuk Devleti, which is published in German and Turkish as the publication organ of Yeditepe University as of February 2024. Throughout his career, Yener Ünver has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in criminal and criminal procedure law at many universities, published numerous scientific books, articles, translations, and other works, and co-authored and edited many works. He has been continuing many national and international serial publications and also organizing comparative academic and/or student law scientific events and publications since 2014. As of July 2024, he is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Middle East Rights Research Center of the University of Salerno, Italy.
